Mercedes Schlapp's position in the role of White House Strategic Communications Advisor isn't simple. As the White House Strategist Communications Advisor Mercedes Schlapp faces a myriad of issues. The president is his own communications director. There are numerous legal matters that may affect messaging strategies. Cabinet Secretaries have been involved in controversies. However, throughout it all Schlapp remains focussed on the task at hand, working closely with White House's political and legislative affairs departments and policy shops as well with the larger communications team in order to oversee policy implementations. Her focus to date has been issues such as security in schools and the opioid crisis, infrastructure, trade, and other related topics. She does not interact much with the media in her role. In March, she was the subject of a lot of media attention because her name was mentioned as a possible candidate in the race to replace Hope Hicks in the role of communications director. Mercedes Schlapp isn't in a comfortable position as White House strategist communications advisor. Her job is made difficult due to the fact she has to work with the president who serves as the director of his communications. Additionally, there are numerous legal cases which can disrupt the administration's strategy for communication, and a number of Cabinet secretaries are caught up in personal disputes. Schlapp has been keeping an eye on the target, and has been coordinating policies together with White House staff from the department of legislative and political affairs and policy shop in addition to broader communication. Her focus so far is on topics like the safety of schools, opioids, infrastructure and trade. Schlapp hasn't dealt with reporters much in her current role. But she drew a burst of attention in March after her name was suggested as a contender to replace Hope Hicks as communications director. This fight was ugly. Schlapp was a ally of Tony Sayegh who was also an aspirant. The two began fighting in the media. Schlapp made a call to Sayegh when The Washington Examiner printed a bad article about him.
